Classic 4-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
The definitive, licensed 4-day Andean trekking pilgrimage following the original Inca road network through high-altitude passes and ancient cloud forests directly into the Machu Picchu Citadel.
Day 1: Cusco – Km 82 Trailhead – Patallacta – Huayllabamba
Your Classic Inca Trail expedition begins with an early morning hotel pickup in Cusco at 5:00 AM. We embark on a scenic 1-hour and 45-minute drive through the Sacred Valley to the historic town of Ollantaytambo for a brief rest and optional breakfast. From there, a 50-minute drive brings us to Km 82 (Piscacucho), the official government checkpoint where we present original passports and permits alongside our professional team of licensed guides, cooks, and porters.
The trek starts along the shores of the Urubamba (Vilcanota) River. Following a 1-hour hike to the community of Miscay, we embark on a gentle 30-minute ascent to overlook the magnificent archaeological site of Patallacta (Llactapata). After an expert guided historical overview of its terraces and urban sectors, we continue to our lunch spot. The final stretch consists of a 1.5-hour trek to our first official campsite in the Huayllabamba community (3,000 meters / 9,842 feet) for a freshly prepared dinner and rest.
Day 2: Huayllabamba – Dead Woman's Pass – Pacaymayu
The most physically demanding day of the trek begins at 4:30 AM with hot coca tea served directly to your tent, followed by a high-energy breakfast. Today we tackle the steady, high-altitude ascent toward the highest point of the Inca Trail: Warmiwañusqa, universally known as Dead Woman’s Pass (4,200 meters / 13,779 feet).
The challenging uphill hike takes between 4 to 5 hours, winding through distinct microclimates and alpine landscapes. Reaching the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the Vilcabamba mountain range. After celebrating this achievement, we begin a 2 to 3-hour descent down stone stairways into the valley to reach the Pacaymayu Campsite (3,600 meters / 11,811 feet), where a warm lunch, dinner, and a well-deserved night of rest await.
Day 3: Pacaymayu – Runkuracay – Sayacmarca – Wiñayhuayna
Waking at 5:00 AM, we start our most visually stunning trekking day at 6:00 AM, walking along incredibly preserved sections of the original stone Inca highway. We begin with a 50-minute climb to the semi-circular ruins of Runkuracay (3,800m). After an informative tour, we climb for another hour to the Runkuracay Pass (4,100m), showcasing exceptional views of the Pumasillo Snowcap.
We then descend for 1.5 hours to the strategically positioned cliffside ruins of Sayacmarca (3,600m), followed by a 40-minute walk to our lunch site at Chaquicocha. In the afternoon, the path guides us through lush cloud forests to the third pass, Phuyupatamarca ("Town in the Clouds" at 3,580m), offering ceremonial fountains and distant vistas of Machu Picchu Mountain. A final 3 to 4-hour descent down ancient stone stairs brings us to the pristine terraced complex of Wiñayhuayna ("Forever Young" at 2,700m) for our final group dinner and campsite stay.
Day 4: Wiñayhuayna – Sun Gate (Intipunku) – Machu Picchu Citadel – Cusco
Our final journey begins with an early 4:00 AM wake-up call and a quick breakfast before hitting the trail at 5:00 AM. We embark on a highly anticipated 1-hour and 20-minute hike through lush, high-jungle terrain until we reach Intipunku (The Sun Gate). Here, you will witness your first spectacular panoramic view of the majestic Machu Picchu Citadel during sunrise.
From the Sun Gate, we complete a short descent to the main security checkpoint of Machu Picchu to clear official documentation. Your professional guide will lead a comprehensive, 2-hour historical walking tour through the archaeological circuits according to official government regulations. Afterward, you will travel down to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo)—either via a scenic 1.5-hour hike or a 30-minute shuttle bus ($12 USD optional ticket). Following free time for lunch, you will board the afternoon expedition train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by direct private bus transfer returning directly to Cusco city center.
